#8 of 50 A Visit from the Goon Squadby Jennifer Egan
I’m sold.  I absolutely adored this book, I adored every precious minute that I spent devouring it.  I literally read it cover to cover in less than 24 hours.  It took me awhile to pick up this book.  I am not one to buy into hype about literature, or to like someone because theThe New York Timesextols them as a virtuoso, a literary star.  But I have to say, I loved this novel.
Egan basically puts together a novel of short stories that interconnect, sometimes only at the smallest, most insignificant points.  Regardless of the sometimes lack of interconnection or a bit of confusion, the novel reads seamlessly.  That seems like a contradiction right?  And it is, but every story built upon the larger theme of this book, that “time is a goon.”  All of the characters, very human; some loveable and some detestable, find themselves sucked into the vortex of time.  They are changed irrevocably by time.  And I suppose the reason I related to this book on such a visceral level, was that we all are changed by time and quite often not in the way that we wanted to be.
For me after reading this novel, I found myself reflecting back to my early 20s and remembering who I was then and where I thought I would be in my early 30s and they are two very different places; emotionally and physically.  The cast of characters is different and some people reappear at times and others do not.  And that’s life.  It’s really nothing more or less than us changing and living through time.
Plain and simply, I loved it.
